It has never been easy to figure out what you want to do with your life. Life choices and career options are vast, so establishing our passions and interests become a way of deciding how to spend our time. The reason I started studying martial arts and self defence was because I thought it was necessary to gain the skills. I had ambitions of joining the military and I wanted to have some base level of combat fitness and experience of fighting. In my mid teens I also was unlucky to cross paths with some local bullies, after that I started training in other styles to learn more to protect myself.
Other than a necessity, training in any martial art style can be fun. Especially if you pick one that has other aspects that you are interested in, and you could find that expanding your knowledge as well as you skills is far more interesting than expected and it can open up the opportunity to travel to over countries and experience other cultures.
Of course, fitness has to make an appearance on this list. Martial arts has a natural push towards physical conditioning. As a personal trainer I know that the body needs a couple of intense training sessions each week to keep in decent shape and maintain performance levels, and to improve or excel a minimum of 3 sessions is required.
There is a social aspect to training. Clubs bring together communities, you are reading this probably because of the social media profile. My traditional club has had a great social scene. We have even witnessed a marriage because the club brought 2 people together.
Being prepared is another reason. We all hope to avoid violence, but sometimes we are just unlucky and we are faced with difficulties and danger. Training in Krav Maga or another style based in realism gives us a little confidence boost.
But I think the main reason we study is simply to better ourselves. There is a challenge within most to exceed on our past and constantly achieve a "new high score". I am someone who quietly works. Theres always something happening in my background that few people even notice. In my teen years it was martial arts, as an adult I'm almost always involved in a education program... I have even been progressing through salsa dancing courses on the quiet (I am curious if any of my friends or family will read this and comment).
Trust me on this, the extra effort (particularly the effort you put in when no one is looking) will pay dividends in the long run.
