We still want to keep our skills sharp even when we are unable to train together in a gymThe world occasionally throws unexpected surprises at us. Whether its a work deadline, personal appointment or global pandemic, sometimes we are unable to get to the training facility. It may take some imagination, but it is certainly possible to train solo.
Having base knowledge in the style will help, but even without you will be able to find something online that can assist you. It can be a book, a DVD or YouTube instruction series or one of the guides I have posted on this site, such as The Toolbox. |
Tips to train solo
Get a library
Reading is one of the best ways of learning a physical skill. A well written instruction is designed for you to visualise the action, and in doing so you build stronger memory pathways and are easier for recalling and implementing. So my first tip is for you to read self defence books, but not blog articles. Self defence books like those teaching Krav Maga and other street systems are written with clear purpose, layout with the readers learning experience in mind and as a clear objective. They are checked, re-checked, and re-written. Blogs are not. Blogs are aimed more towards social reach, more website hits and SEO to boost visits and conversions to sales and memberships (trust me on that). Whereas a book or an ebook is actually designed to help.
Become your own instructor
Teach yourself as if you were teaching others. Stand alone in your home with a clear space and verbally instruct and demonstrate a beginners class. Teach something simple like the first couple of stance positions, the basic forward and backward steps, 360 defence with simultaneous cross punch combo. Explain the principles of self defence to your imaginary class. Try to use your own words and simplify as best you can. Because if you cannot explain it simply, they you don't know it well enough yet.
Work out with intensity
Find a challenging workout, with strict short break periods. For example, 1 minute rounds on the heavy bag with 15 seconds break between rounds; simulating the exhausting felt in short sparring sessions where the only break you get is switching partners. The free explosive workout on this website is a good High Intensity Interval Training style workout, try it, keep the breaks to a maximum of 30 seconds between sets and 1 minute between exercises.
Workout tip: Do not save any energy in the tank. For this style of training, the best results come when you treat every set as the one and only set, don't pace yourself, give it your all.

Krav Shadow Box
Vary the speed and intensity of this training. Take it easy for the first few rounds and speed up as you start to feel the movement flow better and better between techniques. Visualise an opponent, react to their attacks. If you are having problems with this, watch a Krav Maga demo on Youtube or a movie with a decent fight scene in and re-create it.
Invite a friend over for a session
We all have made friends in Krav classes. You can make friends anywhere, but rarely do you get the kind of friends who laugh and joke around with you while punching your face or kneeing you in the groin, a classmate you choked out is a friend for life. So invite them for a pad session.

Yes, I know it was first on the list but knowledge is power. Read and learn more. Make sure that everything in your own mental toolbox is there for a purpose and readily available when you need it. As an instructor for over 10 years, I still read beginner books, looking for new ways of describing techniques and gain a deeper understanding.
Checkout the ToolboxI have put together a self defence learning program that uses visualisation techniques to speed up the learning process. It's called The Toolbox. All the best techniques, dirty tricks, fight strategies and plans I know of put into one high value package.
